Upcoming Web 2.0 Events in Silicon Valley

by morgret on January 4, 2007

I’m wading through email and RSS feeds after nine days in Mexico. Here are some interesting SF Bay Area events I’ve found in my inbox.

Tuesday January 9th, BayCHI: Self Experimentation; Ubiquitous Computing
7:30pm to 9:30pm, PARC Auditorium, 3333 Coyote Hill Road, Palo Alto

Two presentations that evening.

  • What I Learned From Self-Experimentation and How the Work Evolved by Seth Roberts, U.C. Berkeley
  • Getting a Grip on Ubiquitous Computing through Prototyping by Scott Klemmer, Stanford

The meetings are free and open to the public. I’d highly suggest membership if you’re in the area, it’s only $20 for the first year, and $15 per year for renewals. With membership, you can receive a member directory, weekly job posting email (84 jobs this week, and that’s during a slow holiday week), and join a dozen Birds of a Feather groups.

Tuesday January 16th, Social Media Club San Francisco
6:00pm to 8:30pm, CNET, 235 Second Street, SF

“Chris Heuer will lead a round table discussion on the direction of Social Media over the coming year and how individuals and corporations alike are adapting it into their everyday lives. We will also follow up on the topic of Blogger Ethics/Disclosure and will be discussing the membership opportunities within Social Media Club.”

The event is free, but registration is requested. Suggestions for additional topics are also being accepted.

Thursday January 25th, SF Beta January: The Web 2.0 Mixer
6:00pm, 111 Minna Gallery, 111 Minna St, SF
“SF Beta is an event for founders, developers, designers, bloggers, investors, journalists, and everyone else in the Web 2.0 community. We’re back for yet another month of mixing, complete with Limerick Pitches from some very special startups.”

Pricing is $5 or $15, and online presale tickets with discounts are coming soon. Registration is via meetup, and there are 78 RSVPs to date.

Thursday January 25th, GABA Social Networking and Web 2.0
6:00pm to 9:00pm, Building D, 3410 Hillview Avenue, Palo Alto

The German American Business Association presents a “behind the scene” look at some of the popular social networking platforms (LinkedIn and OpenBC/Xing have German founders/co-founders). Representatives from LinkedIn, OpenBC/Xing, miaplaza, and Trusted Opinion will talk about their business and the future of the industry. Topics include relevance of social networking, whether the industry is headed, and business models.

Cost is $20 for members, $30 for non-members, and $40 at the door. Complimentary appetizers, beer, wine, and soft drinks will be served.

Wednesday January 31st, Back To The Future: Beyond Web 2.0

6:30pm to 9:00pm, Hurricane Electric, 48233 Warm Springs Blvd, Fremont

Harry McCracken of PC World, Robert Scoble of Blogger, and Sean Ness of Stirr.net and Institute for the Future will speak at this free Silicon Valley Web Builder event.

Saturday February 10th, Community Next: The Present and Future of Online Communities Conference
All day event, Stanford University

The conference is all about connecting the people that are building the online communities, learning how to make a successful online community, how to build the community, get money, how to succeed, and more. Speakers include Guy Kawasaki, James Hong (hotorNot), Tara Hunt, Sean Suhl (SuicideGirls) and more.

Registration is $195 for early birds, $20 for students, and $500 for VIPs (dinner the night before with all of the speakers).
